why are the power grids networks connected to an out side source?
wouldn’t the first step in creating a secure network be to completely remove it from outside networks? why are the networks for the power grid connected an outside source like the internet(or the like)?
For years, power engineers insisted that components of the power system had to rely on proprietary technology. Proprietary technology means systems that use proprietary operating systems (NOT Windows), and that either functioned on a totally isolated basis (the best approach), or if they had to be interconnected, utilized proprietary communications channels that were not exposed to intervention by outside agencies. And this was done precisely to avoid the kinds of problems that people (and especially the most ignorant among, which category includes both the media and government) are becoming concerned about.
The current hype about ’smart grid technology’ is simply an approach to addressing concerns on the grid that could be resolved by building a grid that is robust enough to meet modern load requirements and that satisfies traditional reliability criteria.
Any time you impose an outside control system in order to increase the APPARENT capacity of a system, you introduce the possibility of widespread catastrophe. The electrical grid is the most complex machine that has ever been built, and it is the most robust precisely because it is designed to be self-protecting – in the event of a problem, it shuts itself down before irreparable damage can be done, and sets the stage for the system to be restored quickly.
Think about the blackout of August 2003. It required a number of factors to come together to cause that failure to occur – at least 6-7 independently occurring events contributed to it happening, and had any of those things not occurred, the failure might have been avoided. That kind of failure almost looks stochastic, although chaos theory predicts that it can happen about once every 35 years. And the resilience of the grid meant that the ‘failure’ only lasted for a few hours for most people.
But if you try to patch the system with some kind of super control scheme, that control scheme itself becomes, under the best scenario, a ‘point of common failure’ that can cause a far more widespread failure. And in the worst scenario, the control scheme becomes the portal through which malicious intervention can lead to failures at times when the consequences could be far more severe. Just think about what would have been the consequences if someone could have intentionally TRIGGERED a August 2003 blackout in the hours immediately following the attacks of 9/11.
So to answer the question – power grids today do not rely to any significant degree on outside systems such as the internet for critical operational functions. But geniuses in the media and government are proposing so-called ’smart grid technology’ as a cheap fix, instead of making the kind of investments needed o build a truly robust grid And that kind of ‘do it on the cheap’ mentality could lead to disaster.
