Can i set up a shared folder on 2 computers with 1 Ethernet cable?

Can i set up a Shared folder through a network with a ethernet cable running in each other’s ports? No internet connection involved? And if so, How am i able to get the shared folder on Windows Vista to show up on a Windows XP computer?

If you are using a cable directly between the Ethernet ports on the two computers, then you must use a cross-over cable. You must also set up static IP addresses on both computers. Go into the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) properties on the XP machine and into the Internet Protocol Verison 4 (TCP/IPv4) on the Vista Machine. In both set the General tab first radial button to “Use the following IP address:”. Under the IP address use 192.168.1.10 on one machine and 192.168.1.11 on the other, set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0. (When you are finished remember to set the radial buttons to “Obtain an IP address automatically”).

Then set up the sharing as per the instructions from the others.
